Question: “Who is God, what is His character & nature?”
Bible Answers
The Bible
never attempts to prove who God is or His existence; rather it states who God
is, His character, nature and requirements.
God’s
character
God’s characteristics
include: God is compassionate (Mark 1:41), holy (1 Peter 1:16), just (Acts
17:31), loving (1 John 4:8), truthful (John 14:6), merciful (Luke 6:16), and
gives grace (John 1:17). While God judges sin (Luke 15:10). He also offers
forgiveness (Luke 1:77) to those who ask.
God’s nature
God’s
nature include: God is spirit (John 4:24), intangible (John 4:24), infinite (1
Timothy 1:17), incomparable (2 Samuel 7:22), and unchanging (Malachi 3:6). God
is omnipresence (Psalm 139:7-12), omniscience (1 John 3:20), and omnipotence
(Psalm 115:3). God is eternal – He is from everlasting to everlasting (Deut.
33:27), unchanging – He is the same yesterday, today, and ever more (Ps
102:26-28). God is one and is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:16-17).
God’s work
God’s works
includes: God created the world (Genesis 1:1), He created mankind (Genesis
1:27), draws the lost to Christ (John 6:44), leads us to righteousness (Romans
2:4), and will judge mankind (Revelation 20:11-15).
A Relationship
God wants a
relationship with us as He had in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. He
wants a relationship predicated on our complete trust and love.
God is love
He so loves
us that He gave up His Son to rescue those of us who are willing to come to Him
(Ephesians 1:11). For God so loved
the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him
should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16).
God is
If we let
Him, He is our God, Lord, strength, refuge, rock, deliverer, fortress, shield,
stronghold, and salvation. He also is our friend, companion, and
helper. He is faithful, gracious,
merciful, kind, and most of all, He is the God who loves us more than we can
imagine. But God, who is rich in mercy,
for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath
quickened us together with Christ (Ephesians 2:4).
As we gain
understanding of God’s great love, it moves from our head to our heart, and we
are better able to love God and to love others with God’s love.
